We Believe

Dressed in our pajamas,
First thing this morning,
 Craig swept me into his arms.
We waltzed to the tune of,
"The Anniversary Waltz"
 sung by Connie Francis,
around our bedroom.
 Forty Years ago today
we were sealed
 for Time and All Eternity.
All Eternity.
What a beautiful dream.

"God is eagerly waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can’t if you don’t pray, and He can’t if you don’t dream. In short, He can’t if you don’t believe."
 Elder Jeffrey Holland, "This is the Greatest of all Dispensations", July 2007, from CES Fireside 2004

We are Praying
We are Dreaming
We Believe.

Mothers' Day-A Day of Smiles and Tears

Mothers' Day-

Since Childhood I have believed Mothers' Day had been created because everyone had a mother just like mine.  Certainly such women deserved their very own holiday.

 Being older and wiser I know that it is not the case.  Recently I spoke to a woman who when I asked regarding good memories of her mother replied she had one.  One?  ONE!!!
'Life is not a bed of roses' as they say.  Pain is not a stranger to anyone.

The Mothers' Day we recently celebrated portrayed a wide range of emotions for our family.
The day began with the news that our 40 hour old Great-Nephew had passed away.

Yes, on Mothers Day.  Bradley and Jammie and our entire family were on an emotional roller coaster that weekend: He is Born! Something is wrong! He will be okay! Oh no! Procedures? Surgery?  He will be okay! He is on life support.  He is gone.  After Sweet Baby James' passing Jammie and Bradley were able to hold him, take family photos, and cherish his sweet little body.

Just hours later Bradley assisted in the blessing of his baby niece in a church service.   I stand amazed at the strength Bradley and Jammie exhibited throughout this difficult sad experience.  They say they can Feel the Prayers and Love of others in their behalf. Bradley shared with me that the next Sunday when he entered the chapel of his ward it felt as if all the heads turned to look at him.  Then, just moments later, he felt surrounded by their prayers and love.  He felt it.  I believe him.

 A few years ago Alyssa (the daughter of my brother Larry and Suzi)

moved to the same area of Utah that my mother in law lived.  Each time I was in town Alyssa and I got together.  We have been to breakfast, lunch and dinner together.

 We have shopped and been to the movies.  We have talked about the gospel and about the fellas in her life.  I adore this young lady.  She has the heart of a saint.  She delights to work with the mentally challenged. She attends the temple weekly.  Her smile is radiant.  Her heart is loving.

A beautiful wedding occurred in our family last weekend-Alyssa married the man of her dreams in the San Diego temple. I never set eyes on this man until he walked into the Sealing Room holding her hand. When he walked in the room my heart melted.  Goodness surrounds him. The room lights up with his smile.

Not only was our entire family thrilled for Alyssa we participated in making the event wonderful.
The wedding dress was obtained through my sister Cindy, who owns the Hitching Post.

Decorations were designed by Cindy and Alyssa's mother, Suzi.

The Food was catered by Cindy (yes, she also owns a catering business). AND it was the most delicious catered food EVER!

The flowers were arranged by Shannon...my daughter, the florist!

Music was provided by Nephew-in-law, Gregg!
A professional video was made by Nephew-in-law, Brady.
All we need is a professional photographer to marry into the family so we can do the whole show because if my daughter, Rebecca lived around here she could make the cake!

May I share with you what I have been doing with my time for the last few months?
It all came together last week.
AHhhh.
It was perfectly wonderful.
Beautiful.
Inspiring.
We celebrated the 170th birthday of the Relief Society.

Past stake Relief Society Presidents were honored.

A presentation was given using Daughters in My Kingdom.

Beautiful soloists added to the
A video depicting the history of Relief Society interwoven with our local history was shown.
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqOb8mBux3E

Displays were made by each ward of items reflecting the old adage,
 "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do or Do without."

 There were some very clever ideas

We had birthday cake.
The General Relief Society President Julie B. Beck has explained why knowing our history is important.
"Our presidency has prayed, fasted, pondered, and counseled with prophets, seers, and revelators to learn what God would have us do to help His daughters be strong in the face of “the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth.” An answer has come that the sisters of the Church should know and learn from the history of Relief Society. Understanding the history of Relief Society strengthens the foundational identity and worth of faithful women."

This evening was dedicated to strengthen women through the history of Relief Society.  We were generously blessed with the Holy Ghost this evening.  His power was a gift to those in attendance.  It was wonderful to experience.

Now, I feel like a regular person.  I can Blog ( missed this) , Pinterest, Watercolor, and maybe garden soon!

It is ALMOST Valentine's Day!  Just 2 more days!  You see, I consider the entire MONTH of February as Valentine's Day.  Let the Pink and Lace and Love start to flow.
Monday, Lura is coming over to make Valentine's with Jan and me.  We will have a little lunch and then create frilly little cards.  I can't wait.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~
Today I had a little treat. The phone rang. I could hear Shannon's voice but she wasn't speaking to me.  Apparently her phone was in her Sunday bag.  It accidentally called me.  She was teaching her Primary class of 4 and 5 year olds.  I listened for 5 or 10n  minutes as my darling daughter shared with her class things about herself.  She said, "This is the journal my grandma gave me when I was baptized.  She wrote this to me [ I couldn't hear what she read]. When I was baptized I wore a white dress.  It was a special day in my life.  The next time I wore a white dress was a very special day.  Do you know what day that was?  I was married in the temple in a white dress. Did you know that when you go to the temple you wear white?"  I could hear little children chirping throughout the lesson including her son Cooper.  Her voice was adorable.  She was patient and darling to the little children.  At last I had to hang up and go to my own church meetings but I didn't want to.  Getting the chance to hear her teach  without knowing she was being heard was such a delight. As I drove to church I offered a prayer of thanks for such a delightful good-hearted daughter.  In fact, I was filled with adoration for her to the point of being overcome.  Is there anyway to really express the immensity of love that can be felt for someone? Then it occurred to me that Heavenly Father feels that for us, His children.  Isn't that wonderful?  He love us!
For Valentine's Day we traditionally think of ways to express love to the special people in our lives.  This February I would like to include thinking of ways to express love to Him.  He has given me so much.
What can I give Him
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a Lamb.
If I were a wise man
I would do my part.
What can I give Him?
I 'll give my heart.
(Christina Rosetti)
How do you give your heart?
I have been thinking of ways.
Do you have ideas?
The Parable of the Ballerina Jewelry Box
Retold from a story told by Paul V. Johnson
The mother of two little girls purchased 2 beautiful large ballerina jewelry boxes for their Christmas gifts.  The box was pink.  A beautiful ballerina twirled when the lid was lifted to a lovely tune.  This was the perfect gift.  Just before leaving the store the mother remembered that she needed a birthday gift for a niece.  A smaller version of the jewelry box was chosen for her.
Later that day the mother told her daughters about the upcoming birthday party and showed them the gift they would take.  One little daughter burst into tears!  In between sobs she explained that this was the very gift she wanted.  She cried and cried.  Holding the little child lovingly in her arms the mother offered comfort and the possibility that such a gift might be hers at Christmas or for her birthday.  The little girl sobbed that this was the perfect jewelry box.  It was the one she wanted.  She cried for a half hour in the arms of her mother all the while the mother knowing that a better gift was coming soon.
While offering comfort the mother felt some amusement for she saw with eternal eyes. How many times had she cried that the ‘perfect’ gift was not hers?  Certainly Heavenly Father had offered her comfort all the while knowing that He had something better in store.
~~~~~
Interestingly this story ( told at our satellite Stake Conference) compliments the focus of my scripture study of the last few days.
Doctrine and Covenants 58:3-4
“Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation.
“For after much tribulation come the blessings.  Wherefore the day cometh that ye shall be crowned with much glory; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand.”

 Tripp died today.  Craig, Jan and I are very sad for Courtney his angel mother. She has been a devoted mother to her darling boy.  Tripp has endured suffering beyond imagination his 2 years and 8 months of life.  Perhaps you would like to offer words of comfort.  It will do your heart good.

Angels We Have Heard on High

Something beautiful happened in in Sacrament meeting and I was apart of it.  The closing hymn, “ Angels We Have Heard on High” was accompanied by a piano duet and me at the organ!

The congregation sang with their hearts.  The piano provided a glorious decorative melody while the organ sustained with strength.

I have never been part, in that way, of something so beautiful.
To play along with other musicians!  To have a congregation singing. To follow a chorister.  To feel the Holy Ghost with me.  I was soaring.

While playing the organ tears filled my eyes; tears of gratitude to be part of the beautiful experience of singing our prayer.  It was a prayer heard, I know.

This morning I sat with Ledger on my lap looking through family photos that are on this blog.  Ledger is 17 months old.  He was mesmerized for 20 minutes looking at his brothers and sisters, mommy and daddy and others.  I was too.  Photos bring memories to life.

Craig and I went on a 15 night cruise through the Panama Canal.  We had 2 cameras and took tons of photos but I haven't had the time to blog about our trip.  We came home to lots of things to do and now I am in Arizona-- Grandchildrensitting.  Rebecca and Ben are in New York City on a business/Fun trip.  This morning we actually spotted them on the TODAY show w/ Al Roker.  Whoooeeee!

The other day Cindy, my sister, invited me to join Pinterest.  Have you heard of it?  I  hadn't.  Oh, my goodness.  It is such a fun website.  It's like making your own Photo magazine.  You fill it with all the things you LOVE and want to be able to find again!  Take a look....pinterest.com If you are want to be a part of it let me know,,,you will need an invitation,,,,which I would love to send you.  If you are already a member let me know so I can Follow you.

In honor of 9-11 I joined the Interfaith Counsel and spent this morning doing yard work at the local Mosque.  Muslims, Epsicopalians, Jews and LDS worked together, side-by-side.  There was an air of kindness and love permeating the event.

We are flying our flag.  Are you?
10 years ago on the 11th Craig and I had boarded a plane and were waiting to take-off.  We were on our way to St. Louis were we would rent a car and drive to Nauvoo, Illinois.  When we were asked to disembark we had no idea that we would not be getting right back on.  In fact, we were not allowed to get our baggage until several hours later.  This was a life altering day for America.  I remember thinking, "Who are terrorists?"  So much has been learned and so much has happened in those 10 years.  At least for today I was part of the healing process.

Ramadan Ramblings

Our Sunday dinner was with several hundred Muslims. Yep, that's the truth.  Craig and I attended a Ramadan 'Break the fast' at our local Mosque.  During the month of Ramadan, which celebrates the month in which Mohammed received the Qur'an,
Muslims fast every day from Sun up to Sun down.  Each night they meet together to break the fast with first a call to prayer then a feast.  I was allowed to put a scarf over my head, remove my shoes and go into the room where the prayer was offered and observe.  The men were all in straight rows at the front of the room.  The ladies, with heads covered in various beautiful scarves, were in the back of the room along with children.  A very long prayer is recited by the leader.  Often everyone bows on their knees and prostrates themselves at times during the prayer.  Moments of silence in which each individual recites parts of the prayer in silence occurs also.
After the prayer the meal began. In an effort not to overwhelm the taste buds of the guests mildly seasoned Persian food was served-all very delicious.
Craig and I were impressed as their leader spoke of the importance of fasting on the spirit.  Our religions are alike in their devotedness to the individual overcoming the yearnings of the flesh to strengthen the spirit.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we fast 24 hours one day a month. Even though I have been doing this since I was 8 years old it still feels like a big deal.  Being hungry is something I try to avoid.  I carry snacks in my purse, in the car, and have taken preparing for a disaster seriously.  I do not  want to be hungry...ever!  But, there is something powerful about fasting.  It gives you the opportunity to say, "I am in charge of this screaming body of mine!  I can do hard things!  Feeding the body is instinct but feeding the spirit requires concentrated effort.

The best Fast is when I turn to Him for strength and offer to Him my hunger for righteousness.
John Groberg tells of a time when he was a young missionary in Tonga on a small island that was severely hit by a hurricane.  Food became scarce as they waited and watched for a ship to come with supplies.  During this period of waiting John became very weak from hunger and thirst.  As he sat quietly under a tree trying to preserve strength he received enlightenment by reading scriptures and pondering. He records some of the Eternal truths he learned in a book entitled,
In the Eye of the Storm.
This is one that had impact on me:

“When you don’t have much food or water, your body seems to absorb about everything so you don’t have to move a lot.  It was a good time for pondering.  The Lord really gets our attention at times like this.  Just sitting in a weakened condition for several days makes a deep impression.  I wondered if that may have been one of the reasons that the Lord allowed Joseph Smith to sit in jail for several months.  I reflected on the prophet’s statement, “The things of God are of more import; and time, and experience, and careful and ponderous and solemn thoughts can only find them out” (TPJS, p.137).

TAKE TIME TO PONDER (p. 113): ‘Sometimes the situations that compel us to do so, such as illness or disasters, are seen as cursings rather than the blessings they can be if properly used. Is it possible that in our busy, work-a-day world, one of the great blessings the Lord gives us is to put us in a situation where we must be quiet, without a lot of outside disturbance and pressures?  Maybe then we will study, ponder, and think  of Him, His ways, and His purposes.
    ...Be still (D&C 101:16, Psalm 46:10)..(sit quietly, get rid of outside pressures-go to the temple, for example-don’t worry about this world) and know that I am God.”
OR “Be still so you can know that I am God and so you can learn of Me and My ways.”  If we aren’t willing to be still, it’s harder to know that He is God.  If the purpose of life is to know and love God, then maybe one of Satan’s best weapons to keep us from that knowledge is to keep us so busy, even doing good things, and so occupied with commitments and pressures that we don’t allow ourselves to be still so we can know God is God!”

Confession: I have a very difficult time being 'still'.  For several months I have been trying to prioritize my life to allow a more of a stillness in my soul.  I have had success with this but much room is left for growth.
John Groberg's forced Fast allowed him to sit quietly, offer himself to God and be taught what is really important in life.

 It must feel triumphant to Fast for 30 days.   I know it does for 24 hours!  After 24 hours I feel a keener spiritual awakening.  What would it be like to Fast 30 days?  What awakening could take place?

Family History

Have I confessed the love of family history?  If it weren't for terrific self control I would be spending hour after hour organizing, writing, searching, comparing, connecting, interviewing, photographing and pondering family members lives.

It all began when I was 12.  A Beehive goal that I accomplished was to create  4 generation family tree.  Mother had most of the information needed nevertheless I sat with pen in hand and copied (there were no copy machines in those days) each page for myself.  Merely writing the names of people I had never met created an interest that I knew then, at that young age, would never leave me.  And it never has.  All through the years I have been engaged in one way or another trying to preserve and find family memories, photos, and such.

Miracles have occurred.  Many miracles.  So many times I call Mom or Dad to tell them the great news.  I found someone!  I know someones entire name now!  I found a photo of so and so!! I have connected with a cousin we never knew of!! On and On.  It is thrilling.

The most recent miracle is a distant cousin (whom I have never met) has decided to transfer his family tree to Ancestry.com.  This is where my family tree is located.  By his doing this I have access to information regarding a family line that I know very little of.

Do you work on your family tree?

3 Posts in One Day?

   I am on a roll making posts today. 3!  It feels good to catch up.
Earlier this morning I read Lauri's blog showing 2 crafts she had recently made.  They are darling pin cushions.  She is always doing something clever.  Well,  she got me in the mood to create.

This is a small (3x4) tablet from, as you can see- Staples  (2@ $1)
Using scraps of scrapbook paper I created these!
Simple, inexpensive and Creative!
I recall President Uchtdorf's wisdom regarding 'creating'.

"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.
Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.
Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty..."  Nov. 2008

3 Birthdays and a Finger

That's right.  3 birthdays.
#1.  Makayla celebrated her 8 11/12 birthday at the family reunion.  We combined our finances to buy her an American Girl.  We had all been together the month prior when Italia received one for her birthday. Since we wouldn't all be together in September we celebrated early.

By the way, don't say American Girl DOLL!!! We get in big trouble around here for such a faux paux.  It is either an American Girl or she can be called by her name.  NOT DOLL!!!!!!!!!!!

#2.  Corbin is 7!  He was jubilant to open his gifts.  When he opened the Legos both he and Cooper shouted in unison!!
Clever Grandma put sparklers along with candles on the cake.

#3.  My honey.  Since Craig and I really don't 'need' anything (have we really arrived at that age?  I remember hearing old people say such a thing but never could imagine feeling that way!), I gave him a surprise experience.

We went to San Diego and stayed in a grand hotel at the harbor.  This is the view from our room.

We loved walking about.  There is something magical about sea air.

Close to our hotel we found Bob Hope!

and a couple kissing!

We enjoyed several hours at the U.S.S. Midway

(it's not that easy to get photos of us as a couple these days).

It was a wonderful Birthday.

OHHH...the finger... Craig had cancer surgery on a finger!!  (don't look if you are faint of heart!)
I made the photo small so it would be less graphic.
